Surviving the Flood

It has been an incredible time surviving the "Great Flood of 2011 at The Washington Harbour".
As you may well know the walls were not entirely put up and the Potomac River wreaked havoc on the Harbour, putting the restaurants under 5 feet of water ,INSIDE!
The cost is anticipated to reach 100 million to restore all the damage and loss of income.
This weekend the walls go down and the Riverside Grille and Tony& Joe's will have the bars open and letting guests view the river once again.
My hat off the Greg Casten and his incredible team for working so hard to get the Restaurants back. " It has been a huge disaster and we have worked hard to take care of our people and try to get them back to work asap"says Mr Casten, partner in the three restaurants Tony & Joe's, Nick's Riverside Grill and Cabanas.
This has been first and worst flood the Washington Harbour has seen in the twenty five years since it was built.
The Roche Salon was left undamaged but we lost a week and are still trying to accommadate our clients in spite of the difficulties we seen daily.
So come down to the Harbour this weekend and support the most beautiful spot in Georgetown and Washington DC for that fact.

Peace*Loe,
Dennis Roche

"Elle's Bells"

I would like to take this moment to publicly thank the incredible staff of the Roche Salon, both at the Washington Harbour and 1624 I street locations for their expertise, outstanding service to clients, and dedication to their art.

In their August 2009 issue, Elle magazine has added to our accolades from the likes of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and many others and has listed Roche Salon as one of the "Top Hundred" salons in the United States. None of this would be possible without our wonderful family of true artists. It has been an honor serving the guests of Roche Salons for the past twenty-five years

Thank You Swine Flu

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the Swine Flu. Not one client has mentioned the economy for weeks. It just shows you the "CNN Effect". Planes turning back for a sneeze on board, schools closing in a panic, all this for what seems an over reaction on the part of the press.
Here is a suggestion for all those that have not been effected by the recovery:budget. Don't stop living or looking bad trying to save money, that is not going to bring back your 401K. The best of saving is budgeting. Make appointments in advance and budget towards it. It is like paying it forward. Now that is a good thought.
Make sure you get your money's worth. At the Roche Salon we have stepped up our services and sharpened our way of doing things to ensure the best in experiences.
Make your appointments with us on line at www.rochesalon.com. We love to have you with us and this is the painless way of ensuring your time. We will get back quick and call and remind you in advance. Add a Kerastase treatment to your request for services and we will compliment you that treatment from now to June 30.
Now that is service!

Peace&Love
Dennis

Bad Hair Bad!!

It is Thursday and another gray, ugly bad hair day. What can you do but cover your hair or tie it back or just ignore the frizz and pretend you meant it to look like that.
I for one am of the idea that no one but no one should have to deal with bad weather hair.
In the past we used to spray anti-humetant sprays. They would glue your hair into submission. Then we tried pomades. They would grease your hair into a slimy mess.
Texturizers would fry fine hair and Japanese Thermal Reconditioners would make you have Cher hair.
For years we looked for the ultimate answer on how to make frizzy hair better without sacrificing the hair to the Devil.
Finally we discovered Keratin Treatments! Yeah for the genius that invented this stuff. The method is harmless, it can work on the most damaged hair and better than any conditioner for repairing the worst fried, dyed and over dried hair. It is a simple method taking a flat iron of appropriate temperature shrink wrapping the hair with a Keratin Protein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratin) that seals, smooths and protects each and every strand on the head.

Three summers have past since we introduced DC to this miracle cure. Time for you to take a look?
Contact me at appointments@rochesalon.com and set a time for a free consultation. Best thing you will do for yourself this humidity season.

Diary of a Hairdresser

Dear Diary,
It is Saturday and a busy day at that. Looking around at the bustling salon and the beautiful work being done and the energy in the place , makes me proud.

This is where I belong , in amongst the best. Watching Romano doing one of his signature, blow dries, Helen do an amazing English influenced haircut or Joseph slide through an Bob haircut that has a very modern edge. It never seizes to amaze me!

Ruth's Japanese Straightening expertise over here, Tam's undetectable hair extensions over there and Gabi working on a Brazilian Keratin Treatment.

The color table seems to be getting allot of action late today, Iryna's just finished what looked like an impossible color correction and it is looking good, Annette skips from hi lite to the next while Sally , our own Shop Coordinator and resident DJ makes the music soar.

Why do I write this? Just bragging? Blowing my own horn?

Nah, just stating publicly how proud of all the hard work, training and dedication this team really has, at the end of the day that is what it is all about, the team.

So where is your team? When was the last time you stated there successes personally or publicly?

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own stuff you forget to stop and appreciate the people around you.

Today I stopped, I looked and I took accountability to thank and praise them.

Remember the best thing in life is to live it, let those close to you join in and occasionally stop and enjoy what you have.

Peace*Love.

How to Pick a Hairdresser

First of all thank you for taking a peek at my first of many ramblings I will post.

Starting with the basics is always the best way to begin any journey.

Like any other relationship in life , it always starts with the mad love fest. Those trembling moments of both lust and need. A dimly lit moment of unrequited trust to your most deepest secrets.

Then you have a few visits and it starts to go down hill. Never the same as those first few moments.

Picking a hairdresser is as hard as picking a lover and all for the same reasons.

I myself admit that new clients , the ones you try hardest to impress, are your best moments as a hairdresser. The hardest thing about working with a menagerie of personalities is to be the best listener and an observant eye, always updating my skills and your looks.

As a client new to a salon or trying a different stylist, always ask for a consultation. They should be at no charge and this will give you time to decide what is best in order to book enough time with them and get their full attention.

Here is a list of "Food for Thought" of what to ask.

1. Take a picture of what you like. It may not be possible but they are worth a thousand words.
Enough said.List for them things you like. I am a big magazine person. I ask what fashion magazine they would pick at the doctor's office. That gives me insight on their taste level. Bring your own materials. The visual always helps.

2. Take note if they are really listening. Hairdressers live on the run. Take your time and you really listen. Clients live in their own worlds, take time.

3. Be realistic about how much time you can spend on your hair each day. Know your skills and be flexible with the outcome to meet your skills.

4. If you like the outcome, buy the proper products to recreate the finished style. We cannot work without them, neither can you.

5. This is a business arrangement. Invest wisely, make known your pleasures and displeasure. We are here to serve you and make you fell great. Nothing less is acceptable.

6. Be aware of upkeep. Ask how much will be necessary to keep up the style. Make sure it is in your budget. There is nothing worse than a one hit wonder.

* Above all, Live, Love and be Happy. This is the most beautiful thing you can do.

Peace*Love,
Dennis Roche
